Trouble with live single games in either Mosaic or MLB.TV?

Here’s a quick suggestion that might help some of you.
Windows Media Player uses a variety of methods to connect to video streams over the internet. Unfortunately, it seems that some of them are causing some problems on some of your machines, which reflects poorly on our product, as it looks to you all like it’s not working.

If you’re having trouble watching single game streams on either MLB.TV or within the Mosaic, I’d suggest trying the following:

1. Open Windows Media Player
2. Open Options, you should see a network settings tab – select this
3. You’ll see RTSP/UDP/TCP/HTTP. Try just leaving TCP and HTTP enabled, if it’s still not working, try just HTTP.

Let us know if this helps any more of you. We’ve seen this clear up issues on a number of our end users machines.

Thanks,

Justin

This didn’t seem to solve my problem. When I’m watching in single game mode, either low or high bitrate, the video pauses and skips every few seconds. It doesn’t do this in Mosaic (6 game) view or from my laptop or work computer.

  2. jim_ossola@yahoo.com

When viewing a single game in the mosiac application, the video will suddenly go slow for a second and then go to fast motion for a second to appear like it needs to catch up. It does this in both the low and medium quality and only in the mosaic. Everything is fine when viewing from the mlb.tv page. What can I do to get the video to view smoothly.

  3. Justin

Jim – this sounds like a cpu/memory issue within the mosaic, which is a heavier app to run than the regular media player. you can confirm this, by hitting control-shift-esc and looking at the performance tab. if you see the cpu spiking when the video slows down, there are a few things we can try from a tuning perspective, but your machine might not be fast enough to run mosaic optimally. We’ll be working on performance enhancements for the application as soon as we get through this initial round of bugfixes.

I have a brand new MacBook Pro, switching from PC. I am able to get Mosaic to work, although I haven’t really explored it yet. But I cannot watch single games in the media player — it says that certain MIME types are not supported by Safari. But I know this should work — advice??

  5. jim_ossola@yahoo.com

Justin-You seem to be correct. The CPU usage would jump to 100% when the video started to speed up in fast motion from the slow motion. What can I do to “tune” this. My machine has 512 of memory and a AMD Turion64 processor.

    @jim
What kind of video card are you using? Based on what you have described it feels like you may not have a fast enough video card or enough video memory to handle the video processing. Some video cards (especially on-motherboard) rely on the main CPU to decode video which can cause the spikes you are seeing.

Please run dxdiag.exe and send results to us. That will help us understand your configuration better.

George-The video card came with the laptop. What procedure do I use to find what type of video card it has. Also, what info do you want from the dxdiag.exe run. Thanks for your help.

    Justin–

I have tried this entire week to get a hold of someone on the support line to fix my blackout issue with the Baltimore Orioles. Can you please give me any suggestions as to how I can have my account un-blacked out from their games? I got so frustrated with being on hold on that support line that i threw my home phone against the wall and destroyed it, now I’m stuck using my cell.

    @jim
You should have received an email from me via our support system with details on gathering dxdiags info. Please reply with the output file of the test and we can help you out.

Mosaic worked fine the day I downloaded, now I can not see any video other than Baseball TV with horrible sound delay. Running on a Mac….all programs obviously correct and plenty of bandwith too. I’ve seen other posts about ports being opened. Are there certain ports that MLB needs…does this even matter? Have some opened on my router for bittorrents w/ UPnP enabled and firewalls off. Buffering stops everytime at 49% for archives, cannot connect to single screen view….where do I stop with the issues!? Have tried uninstalling/reinstalling….not a complete newb….PLEASE HELP GUYS!

i have a few questions. firstly, i signed up monthly and want to wait to see how well mosaic works once the bugs are worked out. will the full year price be prorated after a couple of months?

i had pretty good results with mosaic while i watched the cubs game earlier today. i am using a sony vaio laptop with a belkin wireless g card and router but only have a 32mb video card.(can you upgrade a video card in a laptop?). the six game game screen was working on the lowest quality setting but slows down on the higher settings. understandable with my vid. card but i was happy with the single game i watched – cubs vs brewers @700 kbps. then i read on here about going to the options in wmp and deselecting what you recommended. it was then i realized that i had only wmp 9 – i had just did a reinstall recently – so i upgraded to 10 and did what you said regarding the network tab. after that i havent been able to connect on the 6 game screen at all on any quality level but can watch a single game but with varying results – the video is behind the audio. i went back and reselected them all but nothing changed. what now?

what has been the general consensus about port forwarding in routers? i opened up both the tcp and udp ports as recommended by rmcc yesterday but not sure if that did anything or not.

one last thing, i live in northern manitoba, canada and toronto blue jays games are blacked even though i am a two thousand mile drive to toronto and closer to chicago, minneapolis and seattle than there. they never ever sell out so i really doubt i will ever get to see them play on here. good thing i am a cubs fan. sorry if i am rambling. thanks for any help. rh

For those having problems with audio and video stuttering, hitting ctrl-shift-esc and clicking on the performance tab while the problems are going on may answer the reason for your problems (at least it did for me). It showed me that at mid and high quality, my CPU usage was at 100%. That means, as I understand it, that my computer is simply not powerful enough for the mid and high quality streaming. I guess I should have spent the extra money and bought top of the line when I bought this computer. At least the non-Mosaic 700k feed works great for me so I will be enjoying baseball this summer at a high quality feed, just not using Mosaic.

  14. burrwick@yahoo.com

Changing the settings did not fix my problem, which is, anytime I switch to the single game mode from the mosaic of 6 or 4 games, my screen flashes a number of times (between a black screen and the app) then returns an error. Very Frustrating. I appreciate all the work you are trying to do to clear up problems and I am trying to be patient. Problem is I don’t know if it is the app or some setting on my computer causing my problems. When I saw this message about settings for Windows Media player I was very hopeful but it didn’t help. Is there information I can send from my event viewer that would help you help me with my problem?

    Thanks Justin

Similar to scooterpipe, Mosaic worked ok for the first few days but when I tried to use it today, I could not get any video or audio except for BaseballChannel.tv.

Tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Mosaic runs on Windows XP.

No problems with MLB.tv, by the way.

Feedback from tech team or other users would be appreciated.

  17. rene144@hotmail.com

    @csherwood:
I hope you’re joking. My computer is better than the required specs to run the mosaic. I didn’t spend extra money NOT to get the mosaic. I’m definitely not happy with what’s going on.

Anyway, the stuttering video issue persists. The ensequence people have run away from me 3 days ago and have offered no help (in fact, I was the one to help them in suggesting where to find certain drivers, which is RIDICULOUS!). The stutter isn’t there in the 6-game view, but is there in the single-game view. I really can’t stand this anymore. If you can’t give me a proper product, give me my money back until you fix it! For the time being I’m paying for something I don’t have, and I’m certainly not going to say that I should have spent extra money on my computer when the required specs are there to say that mine is quite more than enough to run the mosaic…

  18. csherwood@comcast.net

    @rene144
sounds like you have a different problem. The 4/6 game view works fine for me at low quality – I just don’t care for the low quality and would rather watch single games through the website viewer than through Mosaic. I think the minimum requirements for Mosaic that they mentioned are for low quality, not high.

  19. rene144@hotmail.com

    @csherwood
I know, but the point is that I can’t even get the single game streams to work on low quality. And the rest of the “symptoms” look the same as yours. I’d be glad to watch 400 K streams on the mosaic (as a start, that is), but I can’t even manage that…

Thanks for the detailed crash log. Expect a support email and follow up.

Have you tried the TCP tweaks suggested earlier in the blog? That seems to have helped quite a few folks with stuttering video.

  22. freak4christ4031@yahoo.com

I can pick up the video feed smoothly, but if I skip forward past Keith Irrizary’s looped 40 minutes of ****, the audio lags behind the video by a good 5-10 seconds. I’m talking pitch is thrown, guy hits pitch, guy catches pitch. And then you hear the bat crack and the announcers talk about whether it will be caught as the first pitch is thrown to the next batter. What’s the deal there? Does this at both high and low bitrates.

  23. mosaic@website.mlb.com

    @mrldoc2
    Your driver date is 3 years old – Driver Date/Size: 1/20/2004 20:48:34, 387584 bytes.

Try updating. Check out “Install Tips / Video Troubleshooting” if you haven’t already.

I have upgraded and received this e-mail:

    Dear 2007 MLB.TV Premium Subscriber,

We are pleased to announce that the MLB.TV Mosaic application included in your subscription is now available for download. You can watch a demo of the application or reference our step-by-step instructions (available for both Mac and PC). All of the information that you need to get started is available on the MLB.TV Mosaic page. Remember that the MLB.TV Mosaic features listed below will be available for viewing beginning Opening Day. Get a jump on the season early…

? Streaming of any 6 LIVE games simultaneously (video speed up to 1.5 MB – TV Quality)

? Customizable viewing allows you to choose how many games you watch at once

? Drag and Drop functionality allows for easy movement between games

? Watch your favorite players at bat with the Player Tracker (a must for fantasy owners!)

    ? PC/MAC compatible

However when I try to sign on using Mosaic OR with 700k for single games, I get the following message:

“MLB.TV Mosaic is only available to MLB.TV Premium Subscribers. Please visit MLB.com and upgrade today.”

I’d love to know how to get in touch with the right someone to look at why my subscription isn’t right. I have tried to sign in on both my Vista machine and an XP machine.

    HELP!!!!!

why does mosaic install 2 instances of swarmcast?

when i got to add/remove programs there is one called “swarmcast” and another called “swarmcast for mlb.tv mosaic”?

also, when i uninstall mosaic could you have it uninstall mosaic as well? since we are getting frequent updates it would be nice to remove both at once. i have no need for swarmcast if mosaic isn’t installed.

  26. benv@blueyonder.co.uk

Hi Justin, Currently mosaic works very well for me except for the fact that i still have a few problems.

Firstly, occasionally i find that when i select a game to watch, the buffering freezes at 99% but this problem is very intermittent.

Secondly, in 6 game mode, even on high quality, i find that the audio is of extremely poor quality when compared to what it is like in single game mode.

One final request is that rather than showing the MLB.TV logo during ad-breaks, would it be possible just to show the stationary camera at the stadium?

    Thanks

  27. andy_kaylor@yahoo.com

I tried these options and a couple more, and it doesn’t resolve my problems. I can’t watch single games from the browser in 700 Kbps on my Vista machine. I get audio but < 1 fps video as described on a previous thread.

With today’s update, I can watch single games in Mosaic at 400 Kbps, although the audio is several seconds behind the video. When I try to switch to 700 Kbps, it stays in the “connecting” status for about 30 seconds, then I get “Stream error. Retrying” and the process repeats.

We really just use the Swarmcast-MLB-TV-Mosaic instance. The generic Swarmcast is simply an artifact of the install process. If you un-install the MLB specific instance of Swarmcast, both will be removed.

BTW, you don’t have to un-install Swarmcast each time you update Mosaic. The Mosaic installer will make sure that Swarmcast is updated properly.

Moving forward, we will try to integrate the Mosaic/Swarmcast un-install process.

The problem I am having and trouble shooting steps taken are listed below. Can anyone offer any advice?

I am not able to view any single game feeds in Mosaic. 4 and 6 game view works and single games play flawlessly through the web.

I plugged my laptop directly into the cable modem, bypassing my router/firewall. Mosaic then worked perfectly, but this is not an acceptable solution for a few reasons. Within a few hours of bypassing the router/firewall, Symantec Antivirus started throwing alerts like crazy and all Internet activity stopped functioning on this PC. I eventually restored a full backup of the PC from earlier in the week. Additionally, this solution prevents my other 2 PCs from accessing the Internet as well as making wireless Internet access on my laptop impossible.

I created rules in the router to allow all outbound TCP traffic on port 1755 and all UDP traffic on ports 1755 and 5005. (This should not be an issue because the router allows all outbound traffic by default, but I created the rules just to be certain.) I also created a rule to allow all inbound UDP traffic on ports between 1024 and 5000 and forward the traffic to my PC with Mosaic installed. This did not solve the problem.

I also changed the settings in Windows Media Player as described on the help blog post dated April 8. This also did not solve the problem.

Can anyone recommend something that may help resolve my issue?

    Thanks in advance.

I forgot to mention one thing in my previous post. My router does not have an option to enable uPNP support.

    Greetings,

I’m also having the sound/video delay problem, aforementioned by freak4christ, with “on demand” games when I skip past the repeating opening, or simply want to watch a great play again.

Would love to have this problem fixed if possible.

Among the other problems with the streamcast, why does my speed always default to 400 kbs insted of the 700 kbs for which I pay for. also why does swarmcast always run even when I am not viewing games, which wastes a good chunk of memory

For me it’s working fine. Some times the video freezes and I have to close Mosaic and restart it. But at every updates I see the improvements. My suggestion would be to have a “full screen – multi games”. A mode where we can have juste the 4 or 6 games and a minimal UI around.

Justin, things were working pretty well for me this weekend. But now it’s more of this rebuffering junk. So constant I would rather just listen to gameday audio.

  39. danclark1990@hotmail.co.uk

Justin, when viewing MLB.TV Mosaic with any amount of games playin, 6, 4 or 1, the video tends to slow down, then quickly speed up. I have read that other people have this problem, and you mentioned their computer specs. Well, I’ve checked and my computer is capable. What else could I try?

Also, when watching a single game, the game status is infront of the video. For example, it will be the first pitch of the inning and it will say that a ball has been thrown… then sure enough a ball is thrown. It kind of spoils it for me when I know in advance what the result of the pitch is… 😦

    Any advice would be helpful.

    Thank You

  40. rene144@hotmail.com

I have to admit that I’m pretty disgusted. Around five days ago I received an e-mail from the support at ensequence.com. The suggestion was to uninstall and reinstall, and it asked me where I got my video drivers. Everything has been quiet since then. Nothing has been done to address my needs even though I was “next in line” and in touch with support.
What am I supposed to do to remove the glitches and the stutter?

  41. danclark1990@hotmail.co.uk

I’ve checked, and the reason my game status is infront… is because the video is behind… by 10 seconds. I checked by running identical games, watching it on MLB.TV and on MLB.TV Mosaic. and Mosaic was abotu 10 seconds behind. How come this is?

  42. rdale@skywatch.org

I guess it is a stop error where I am supposed to “install the most current device driver for your video card”.

Same problem as deftones. I can’t go from 6 game to single game. When i click the game, it opens up a web browser to the MLB.tv subscription page. Help please.

  46. andy_kaylor@yahoo.com

Have you seen any cases where people get good single game video at low quality setting but “streaming error” at high quality?

  47. spivey_ak@hotmail.com

I signed up for the “premium” service and can’t access a single game. I’d hate to think what the regular service gets you. MLB tv is a joke.

  48. kimgjohnst@yahoo.com

This advice, about the connection settings, is the same advice given to me by email, and on the phone. It doesn’t help. I’m on a new MAC, and every bandwidth test I’ve done says around 2700kbps. It should be noted that I am overseas (Taiwan).
What now? This constant rebuffering (in all modes) makes my premium subscription useless.

  49. hogan_disciple@hotmail.com

    Andy_Kaylor,

I find that 9 out of 10 games the 700k feed looks no different then the 400k feed. Too bad I couldn’t get through to customer service to find out why. They’d likely tell me it has nothing to do with them but I’m sure it does cause the late night games usually look good.

  50. teamlotus13@yahoo.com

    Hello.
Like many other folks on here today, I’ve gone through the past few days with nothing but frustration with the Premium service. I can’t understand why a product, (Mosaic), which obviously is not ready for everyday public use, especially for the price being charged, has been released in the manner it has ben.

MLB has unfortunately never been known to be particularly sensative to its customers, the fans, but this should be a major eye-opener. I have no choice but to cancel befor my “trial” ends. I won’t pay for a product which just doesn’t work, and which doesn’t look as if it will in the foreseeable future.

Can someone explain why this product has been released at this time, when you have to be the FIRST to admit it is not in proper working conditin? Why is MLB collecting $$$$ from people without delivering what was promised? MLB should absolutely offer across the board refunds to everyone who wants one, not just those who still can cancel due to the trial period. Let Mosiac continue run for free while he fixes continue. Then, I’d think May 1 is an appropriate date, IF it is fixed, to begin re-charging monthly or a pro-rated seasonal rate.

As it is fans are obviously frustrated, angry, and turning away, none of which was the idea behind the service and certainly not what was planned. Given MLB’s track record, I know this is a probably a waste of typing time, but at least I’m trying to suggest a positive solution to a public relations and poor product nightmare.

Finally, I want to thank the MLB Mosaic Blog crew for all its VERY HARD WORK over the holiday weekend. You have made a monumental effort. Trouble is the product is not ready to work as advertised. So, in fairness, cancel the accounts of anyone who wants them cancelled (Certanly those with working Mosaics will not want to give up the service), then notify everyone when it finally works as it should. Thanks very much and good luck.

  51. tricklin714@yahoo.com

AND WHERE IS THE TECH STAFF TODAY WHY WE SUFFER THRU THERE MISERABLE PRODUCT…..SPENDING THE MONEY THEY COLLECTED FROM CUSTOMERS WHO EXPECTED A WORKING PRODUCT?

  52. hogan_disciple@hotmail.com

    Tricklin,

I agree that the 700k picture is the same as the 350k picture. Looks nothing like the demo on the site. i e-mailed MLB.tv customer service but no response. don’t feel like waiting 2 hours on the phone for them to tell me it’s my internet when I have a 10 Mbps service and am running a new computer.

  53. eliasperson@yahoo.com

I agree as well. Other than the technical issues with Mosaic, the picture quality of the 700k stream is the biggest disappointment. The quality of the demo is MUCH better than most streams. It is very misleading.

  54. hogan_disciple@hotmail.com

    @eliasperson

I don’t know what it is but the 700k seems to look better late at night when the Western games are all that remains. Think it must be a server issue and ability to stream to the amount of ppl during the day/evening. Hope they can fix it cause most of the time the 700k is not as advertised.

  55. oregonjpub@comcast.net

Well, well. So mlb has rolled out a product, based on Windows Media Player, that simply doesnt work. Pathetic. I cant even get audio. Looks like the only thing that works is my password, so I will use it to express my extreme disappointment and frustration. Good going folks. Thanks for nothing. Lets go Mets.

  56. mosaic@website.mlb.com

    @oregonjpub@comcast.net
What issues are you having? I’ll follow up with an email, but the Mosaic does not rely on Windows Media player it simply uses some of the same technology to stream video.

  57. gallicho@rocketmail.com

Now the audio in the 700k single-game feeds isn’t properly synched. It’s ahead of the video by a few seconds. So I’m watching the 400k stream. Every night it’s another problem.

  58. gallicho@rocketmail.com

Update: audio is ahead of the video in both the 400k and 700k single-game feeds of the Sox-A’s matchup.

  59. tplate2000@hotmail.com

MLB forces us to either spend money on direct tv or spend money to upgrade our computers to view a product I was able to view the past 4 seasons on Cox Cable. What a joke.

  60. dogredsafe@yahoo.com

Everything was working fine all Spring. Now they try to tell us it’s your computer, what a load of bull

  61. jamesleodaily@yahoo.com

Okay this worked all spring but now that the regular season has started it doesn’t work. Nobody involved with MLB.COM seems to care. Since I can’t watch the games that I spent money for on this system I guess I am going to have to spend my summer posting to every messageboard blog or chat that involves baseball to warn everybody that that this is a complete ripoff and that MLB has demonstrated no interest in fixing the problem. It’s too late for me but maybe I can help keep someone else from losing their money.

  62. mmoynihan@gmail.com

Video stream works ok, but the audio doesn’t. Tested on other sites using the WMP withput incident.

  63. dukerino@aol.com

I am glad you are working on fixing the problems we are all having – but again, where did MLB come up with the NERVE to sell this thing as HARD as they did without anticipating all of these issues. ESPECIALLY (and suspiciously) after elminating the cable companies from delivering this package to us via traditional means. I am blown away over the lack of concern for the customer. Now that my cable company is offering the package I am attempting to cancel my subscription but after TWO attempts to make contact, I have heard nothing back other than to see the disclaimers stating the cancellation must have been requested during the 10-day period. Can you say CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT?

  64. alphahookups@hotmail.com

I can’t view any games on mosaic. It was working well for the past week then it started giving me problems yesterday and today nothing will load. It keeps giving me a stream error. I change the bandwidths and still no luck. I checked my bandwidth and its 3232 so it should be sufficient. What do I do?

    Thanks,

    Brian

  65. marcusd8@aol.com

I can view on mosaic, but it won’t let me zoom into any game. I also can’t select single games from the main web page. it says i need to upgrade to premium, because i dont have access to 700k or mosaic. but i already have premium, and can still view on mosaic. it still says this even if i click on the 400k stream as well. i think my account needs reset or something. thanks

  66. lsu.nationalchamps@gmail.com

I would like some assistance. I cannot watch any game without it staggering in between frames like a slideshow. either with mosaic or single-view.

my pc more than meets the requirements with a 256 meg video card. the cable nor t1 connection i have access to do not make any difference.

the test app works fine, of course and ive changed everything as stated in the faq and in here.

i would like to at least use the service i am paying for. i have the premium account like most everyone here.

  67. andrew.nacario@gmail.com

I have been using Mosaic since Opening Day and have had numerous problems with the single game stream. The game always slows down and speeds up, and I also have problems with the audio/video lag. I tried changing the Network Option to HTTP and this only helped a little. Do you have any other suggestions?

  68. potus415@comcast.net

I’m still having trouble watching single games in Mosaic. They work just fine with mlb.tv, but it has not worked once in mosaic. The 6 and 4-game screens load fine, but once I click on an individual game, the single game screen pops up, but the video and audio never load. It says Connecting at the top forever. I can see the box score next to the video window. I tried the Windows Media Player suggestions, but it didn’t work.

  69. brettoostman@yahoo.com

After the last update to the mosaic, I can finally view a game in the single game mode, but I swear, the 700k is the same as the 400k feed. No difference. And when are the other two views coming? Is there any way to shut off the annoying player alerts?

  70. spazzovision@yahoo.com

I am using mosaic on PC and I use to get a single screen when I click on one of the 6 screens or an alert players link that I wanted to watch on a larger size. Now I am directed to subscription page.
How can I fix this–I have uninstalled twice and reloaded and it has not changed.

    Help please anyone

Mosaic and MLBTV were working great. For the past 4 days I get the message “temporarily unavailable, check back later” on Mosaic. On MLB TV Premium, I start out watching games and and after I click 2 or 3 times I get a message that says “Records show that you are logged in on multiple computers. Customers are not permitted concurrent use of a single subscription”.
YOUR PEOPLE HAVE RESET MY PASSWORD, told me someone stole my information (my fault), Had me download it again, and so much more. I was told a techncian would call me with 24-48 hours and no ONE HAS CONTACTED ME.

You will refund my money or I will take this as far as I need to. I have money so attorny fees don’t bbother me. I do not believe in charging people 119$ and not providing the service. Please help! And I’m an old guy (50) so please speak as simply as possible. I have just bought a Vista computer (Phillips LX3000). I can no longer get the 700k games to stream. The sound works, but the pictures are more like a slide show, changing every 10-20 seconds. The 400K works like before. If I disconnect my new computer and hook up my old one, the streaming at 700k works fine. So there must be something with the Visa computer. Other streaming things, like courttv/extra are also not streaming, but Youtube items seem to be. (My Internet connection is 8 mega; the new computer has 2gig RAM, so I think that’s more than sufficient, normally) Any ideas? Thanks.

I’ve got the problem that when watching a single game it’s allright for around 30 seconds, than it starts stuttering and finally it looses the connection and the screen of MLB.TV turns black.

in the last days everything was allright but today I am unable to watch any games without losing connection fast.

    can any1 help?
