UPDATE: If you’re on a mac and on the new build, and having newfound audio trouble, we’re terribly sorry for the inconvenience and will have it resolved by tomorrow morning at the latest. In the meantime, a workaround is to change the volume level, then change it back to where you want it, and you should be fine.

We just released a new build, which should address the following:

– Additional Blackout/Credit Card Verification screen related fixes
– Fixed a number of Vista related issues
– PC and Mac Audio not playing on startup – this should be resolved
– Audio Freezing on Mac when changing focus
– Mac clock stops running
– Vista Install
– Clickable Linescores

Going Forward, we’re continuing to focus on the following (as well as triaging install issues on a one-on-one basis):

– Blackout issues
– Video Quality Enhancements
– PC Version video startup on high quality streams stays black before video comes in for ~10 seconds
– Video scrubbing
– Continued audio/video playback issues
– Other bug fixes across the app

For those of you still having trouble, if the self-updater doesn’t seem to be working, i’ll ask that you uninstall and reinstall. I know that this is a pain, but in reviewing our logs it appears that a number of you are still running quite old versions of the client and as we’re fixing bugs causing the problems you’re noting, you should be using the latest build. We’re continuing to refine our self-update process to make this as seamless as possible, and promise that you won’t have to reinstall often. If things are running well for you without a reinstall, then go right ahead and continue.

Again, the whole team here thanks you all for taking the time to come and provide feedback and comment. We have a team of engineers going through the threads here and responding, and while I apologize i’ve been off the air here a bit more than usual in the past 24 hours, please trust that I’m not going to rest until we’ve identified all of your problems, and either resolved them, or given you suggestions about upgrading your machine and network connection. The whole team has been working days and nights, and will continue through the weekend to make sure we’re addressing issues as efficiently and quickly as we can.

To that end, I’ve also been getting a lot of mail from you all, which i appreciate, and I’m doing my best to respond to as quickly as possible. However, if you could limit your questions to Mosaic specific issues, and when i see repeated questions, I’ll blog about answers to them, it will help me actually prioritize and keep the team working on fixing bugs in the software.

    The problem that i continue to have is that in the Mosaic when i’m in the 4 and 6 viewing screens, the video pauses and re-buffers every ten seconds. It’s been happening since opening day. But, in the Mosaic, when I see a game in full view, I don’t have the problem, video and audio work perfectly fine. What could be the problem and how do I go about fixing it? Thanks.

    Mosaic works fine on my PC but on my MacBook there is no audio on the 4 or 6 screen viewing. When I click on one screen to bring up the audio is fine. This is still happening even after the latest update.

    Requiring Direct X 9.0c implies that your video card support Direct X 9.0c as it and your sound card are what utilize the software.

    Does one need Direct X9.0 for the buffering problems to stop? I have a MAC version 10.4.9, my bandwith is 1544.89 kbps. Seems to me this is more than plenty than the Mosaic requirements. What seems to be the problem then?

    I’ve been asking this question for the last 3 days and have not recieved a single answer: Still not able to watch a single complete archived game. keeps replaying the pregame shows on a loop. it’s not the 6 am next day issue either because i can’t even watch a game from monday.
    i’ve spent the last 3 days on hold with the help line and have emailed any mlb tech’s address that i can cull from this blog and get no response. the reason i got this service was because i’m not at a computer when the games are live and would like to watch the full game. COME ON!!

    i cant get an answer from the the normal support channels so could you please have someone contact me or answer this for me.

    1) i live in 70809 (baton rouge, la). the local team here is the houston astros, but for some reason texas rangers games are blacked out even though ranger games arent show locally unless its a national game? what gives?

    2) if im in another country or just in another state, the astros are no longer my local team, so why are they still blacked out? is it because you dont have a better method of identifying where a person is logging in from other than their billing address? this is a pain in the *** because i do travel a lot and i figured a main selling point was to be able to watch my home team while i’m on the road.

    SUGGESTION:

    you said a lot of people are still running the older version of the code. build in some logic that doesnt allow people to access the games if they are running an old version and direct them to a website unless this all gets figured out.

    the people using old code are clogging up your time and i cant get my questions answered.

    make sure you uninstall it in the control panel before re-installing it. also, when it prompts you for your name, give it something different. ie: instead of John Doe, say John D. this might clear up some **** laying around on your computer.

    Yes I can watch the games no problem from the website, which is why I should have been charged for the normal MLB.TV subscription instead of the non-working mosaic.

    The pregame plays for awhile up to 30 min before a game starts.

    In archive view if your watching a game you will see the preview for 30 min as well. However you can click and drag or just click on the thin bar below the video to advance the game forward or backwards.

    This is one of those features that is not really self evident. But archive games are like a saved game and you can skip around in them.

    As per your suggestion, I uninstalled Mosaic and Swarmcast, then reinstalled the Mosaic. I am getting nothing at the middle rate on the 6 and 4 screens. It buffers then says “Stream complete” and all the screens are black. I can get the screens at the low and high rate but it constantly re-buffers at both rates. The single game screen is working OK.

    one thing mlb screwed up on w/ this release is they should have said $30 extra for 700k games and also free download of our BETA mosaic software.

    Please try all three connection speeds. It is possilbe that at work you need to use the low quality stream and can use the higher quality streams at home.

    im not coming down on you. i was just pointing out the fact that all applications have requirements. if it wasnt stated cleary, then they are at fault for that. you should be able to google for directx and download it directly from microsoft.

    I think it was highly apparent from Day 1 that the Mosaic technology was cutting edge in terms of live web-streaming. It is apparent from these threads that you have an older machine with an outdated video card which you can upgrade for $50. I don’t think an extra $50 to allow an older machine to run this technology is that crazy.

    My computer is fairly new and I am having problems that I am waiting to find out if they are related to my not having a powerful enough of a computer. If that is the case, I will recognize that I simply will not be able to get high quality Mosaic feeds. However, you cannot blame the developers for your own machine’s limitations. I give Justin and Adrian and Shane and the rest a ton of credit for getting new upgrades out almost daily. Even if we are all not yet getting the best possible product, they are clearly working around the clock to get us there.

    I find both the web viewer and mosaic 700k feeds look worse now and each time the quality seems to go down. Watching the late games last night and the games looked great. I wish they could look like that all the time

    Running Mosaic on a MacBookPro. In 4 & 6 mode, all three speeds, sound won’t start until I click on the volume bars. W/sound the voice is extremely clipped, almost a tinny/echo sound. While watching single games, sound is good at all speeds, but again I have to click the volume bars to get sound working. Also, every 2-3 minutes I get a pop up saying the games are refreshing, to get rid of this I have to click “ok”, then my screen goes back to 4 screen view and I have wait for everything to reconnect and rebuffer. If I just leave the pop-up visible, the game continues behind.

    I use dual monitors and if I expand mosaic to fill a monitor and then click on the full screen button to watch a single game full screen, some of the game video runs onto the other monitor. It’s not much, nonetheless, it happens.

    Still only getting anything watchable at the lowest speed, Choppy video and audio at medium and nothing at high speed.

    Have noticed the installation puts in 2 versions of swarmcast, “Swarmcast” and “Swarmcast for MLB-TV-Mosaic” is that correct? Also why have Swarmcast in the startup folder?

    Blackouts are determined by IP address and other details from your account. The Mosaic should use the same blackout rules as the web site. If it is different, in that you can view a game on the Mosaic, you cant on the web, or you can view a game on the web you cant in the Mosaic then the Mosaic has an issue. If both are the same, then the issue is with the blackout server and all comments/suggestions should go to http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/help/contact_us.jsp

    I believe the streams come from the ballpark to the network then to MLB. So it will be different in some respect each time. I may be wrong on this end, I dont deal with the Video streams.

    Since MLB does not answer e-mails, I will post my issue here. When I double click on the descltop icon, I get a black screen with a huge diagonal “loading…” message. This never goes away and the browser never opens.

    I believe I have solved my primary problem with MOSAIC. I think many of you may have the same problem.

    Here’s what was going on… Constant rebuffering on 4 or 6 game window. Wouldn’t connect at all to in a single game window. Constant ‘stream error’ or ‘cannot connect’ error.

    I was really surprised because MLB TV works great on my computer. I get big, beautiful, smooth video on the premium 700k stream. NO buffering problems. NO connection issues. NO stream errors. Graphics all work, game data is correct and in synch with the video. The connection stays solid all the time.

    None of this really worked in MOSAIC. Only pieces of MOSAIC worked intermittently. On the 6 screen view, rarely did any games show up. When they happened to, they were choppy and often froze. Most of the time, the application just sat there… trying to reconnect or stuck in buffering.

    I think the problem was that my router was interfering with the peer-to-peer communication that I found out is required by swarmcast. Peer-to-peer communication is not required for viewing even the 700k streams from MLB TV in a web browser which is why they worked fine while MOSAIC couldn’t even connect.

    To test this, I bypassed the router, connected my computer directly to the cable modem… and VOILA! MOSAIC began working and looking like the product I expected.

    I checked my router (which is a Netgear) and found that there is a setting called Universal Plug and Play that allows the peer to peer communication.

    Here’s what the manual says, “The default setting for UPnP is disabled. If disabled, the router will not allow any device to automatically control the resources, such as port forwarding (mapping), of the router. If you use applications such as multi-player gaming, peer-to-peer connections, real time communications such as instant messaging, or remote assistance (a feature in Windows XP), you should enable UPnP. ”

    After ‘enabling UPnP’ in the router setup, I now have some basic ability to see both 4/6 windows with video and a single window video… even on a wireless connection.

    It’s not perfect, but at least something is working.

    Mosaic boys, is this diagnosis reasonable?

    There is about a 1 minute to 1 1/2 minute interval between bufferings on the medium quality setting in the 6 screen mode. Then it takes about 30 seconds for it to buffer. Don’t know if this is useful info or not.

    Everything is going well. Just that I can see only one game at time in the lowest quality.

    I’ve 768kbps of downstream in my Internet connection and I can’t see what I’m paying for. What will You do to improve it?

    We have seen cases (but can’t consistently reproduce) where the login popup comes up *under* the main mosaic window (where you are seeing the ‘loading…’. Try moving or resizing the main window. We entered your issue in our support database and you should have received an email response. I’ll double check that you are in our system.

    To connect and negotiate a stream connection these ports need to be open:

    Out: TCP on port 1755

    Out: UDP on ports 1755 and 5005

    Most people behind firewalls will end up using TCP streaming. But UDP streaming is much more efficient. You can enable UDP streaming by opening up these ports:

    In: UDP between ports 1024 and 5000

    Right click the Icon and select Run as Administrator.

    If you havent uninstall and reinstall, dont launch from the Setup / Install, run Mosaic from the desktop Icon. (via right click run as Administrator)

    I was having the same problems described by jwneural. Following the reccomendation, I removed my router from the equation and plugged my laptop directly into the cable modem. This corrected the problem for me as well. Thanks for the advice. Now I will have to play around with the router settings and ports to see if I can get it to work through the router.

    The video quality is still not as good as the 700k sample on the info page, but at least it now plays. I hope the quality will improve.

    The only other issue I am having is that there is a numerical frame rate counter in the upper right hand corner of the window. It’s not terrible, but annoying. Does anyone else have this issue.

    thank you so much, I just unplugged my router and connected straight through my cable modem and now i can get the single game streams, im using a linksys Wireless G 2.4hz model: Model: WAP54G .. only i dont know how to turn the uPnP settings on like you did with yours so im not sure how to make mosaic worth with my router now

    you need to go to the “applications and games” page on your router. type in the IP address (usually 192.168.1.1) into your web browser and configure the ports from there.

    I have not once been able to view a single game in any view, i can hear them but all i get is a black screen, i can see the line score, but where the video should be is either black or changes to a white screen. I have uninstalled & reinstalled, every time i opened mosaic before i uninstalled then reinstalled it would download an update, but nothing seems to be working…….

    Well, I’m not really sure how, but now it works. For curious Windows users, I was always able to install and launch the app. My problem was that the Mosaic view and the 700k game view were unusable, either never connecting or updating so slowly they were like a slideshow.

    I uninstalled the app, restarted, and installed the updated version discussed above. Make sure you are downloading an installer called MLBMosaicSetup.exe, not Setup.exe. After installing I noticed no difference, but quit and relaunched, and an update downloaded.

    I am now able to watch the 700k single game stream, and even the 4/6 Mosaic stream works at low settings. Mosaic buffers too often at the higher quality setting to be watchable, even on a connection that should clearly support it, but I’ll take what I can get for now.

    watching the Brewers game right now and the quality is horrendous.. both the 500k and 700k are crappy tonight. I know it might not be a mosaic issue but MLB has to figure out it’s streaming issues to get the picture quality fixed.

    Just to let you know I got it working now, everything is working great, clean streams and audio both in single game and 6 mosaic view. Im sure alot of the other people with single game replies are probably having the same issue with their routers blocking the ports. It took awhile through customer support with my router provider, but we got the right ports open and everything is working great now. I appreciate all the feed back and support from emails, and everyone on the blogs. I have no complaints with this service now, and am looking forward to a great season, thanks.. and best of luck to those with problems still.

    Well on day one i was a little slow, but things got better and yesterday (4/4) evrything was fine. now when i logged in today the update kicked in and now mosaic won’t work at all. I’m not sure what happened. here is my configuration

    toshiba laptop with wireleess internet and a 5000+ kbps stream test from your tester. core 2 centrino with two megs ram.

    again worked fine yesterday, now nothing. it keeps giving me a streaming error, any suggestions

    I just uninstalled the programs and then restarted my computer. THen I downloaded the install. THis time I right clicked on the icon to open and wen up to run as administrator, instead of going to properties and then checking the box as I did earlier. I still can’t get single game views. Is the best quality you can get 1960?

    I am unable to view any picture in Mosaic get nice audio though. I had the same issue with the beta last year, but gave up on it. My computer appears to meet the requirements for Mosaic. Any ideas???

    asar2001: The 6/4 screens are much higher bandwidth than the single game 700 Kbps streams. The 6/4 screens are up to 1800 Kbps for the high, and 1200 Kbps for the medium.

    Even the 1200 Kbps is edging pretty close to your maximum of 1500 Kbps, so if you’re doing any web browsing, e-mail, or your broadband just lags for a moment, you’re going to have a tough time avoiding rebuffering.

    I might recommend trying the lowest video quality setting in the 6/4 screen and see if that works for you. This quality setting doesn’t use Swarmcast, but its definitely better than nothing.

    Glad to see you are having better results. I do want to point out that Swarmcast doesn’t require you to enable UPnP in order to work properly. We don’t perform any peer-to-peer outside of your local network (firewall/router).

    I have a “slow motion” effect on the 4/6 screen with very choppy audio at all speeds.

    I seem to have a not so typical problem. Mosaic works pretty well for me, audio/video/single game mode. But I get NO audio when watching a single game from the website. Video is fantastic even full screen.

    I’ve tried Firefox, IE, updated my sound drivers, rolled back from MediaPlayer 11 to 10. I get sound watching highlights on the main MLB.com page, and in Mosaic, but NO SOUND when I choose to watch a game/highlights/condensed/anything in the media player. Works fine on my work computer running seemingly the same tools.

We’ve paid an substantial subscription increase for 2007 and, now, get less for our money.     Whenever I go to the 6 screen view, it never shows any games or any sound when I have it on MEDIUM quality, and I know my computer easily meets the requirements. It just says “connecting” for 30 seconds then says “stream error.” How do I fix this? I didn’t think I would be wasting money on MLB.TV Premium, but if I can only get this super low video quality, I think I will be.
