Blackout Issues
Hi all,
I’ve received correspondence from a number of you regarding blackouts, and wanted to respond en masse to blackout specific issues, as there has been a fair amount of mail and this will get information out to you a bit quicker. We’ve reviewed the accounts of all of you that have written in, and fixed any issues/cleaned up data where we saw that there was an issue with CC verification. Also, in the latest version of the mosaic, we’ve simplified the CC verification form.
For those that are still having trouble getting into games on either the Mosaic or MLB.TV, you’ll need now to call into our customer service department (details here: http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/help/contact_us.jsp) and speak with a representative. We’ve heard your frustration on wait times, and are working to split blackout related call traffic to address it more efficiently. The beginnings of this are already in place. You can select option 1 on the phone, and that should get you more quickly to a representative that will be able to assist you in verifying your account.
For those that feel that they are improperly blacked out, you should call in as well, and just one call should allow them to either explain why you’re blacked out, or help you get access to the games you’d like to see.
Thanks again for your patience and understanding.
Best,
Justin
Justin,
Will these changes go into effect tonight or tomorrow? I am still being blacked out of a game I should be able to see, but don’t want to call customer service unless it’s absolutely necessary.
Chris,
this should be all set, so you should definitely give CS a call.
I’d also like to note MLB.com and MLB Mosaic should match regarding blackout rules. If they are different you should let us know.
Also, just wondering if and when you guys will have multiple audio feeds available. As a Twins fan I find it very difficult to listen to the White Sox announcers.
@ christopher.elke@mnsu.edu
Defiantly on the horizon!
Will we be able to just watch the a certain teams broadcast? i.e., could I watch all the Mets games with their home team announcers?
Nothing is for sure at this time. I just know it is something they want to add into the Mosaic as soon as it is possible to do.
My biggest wish would be to be able to choose between the two broadcasts (home and away) completely. So not just audio, but all of it (graphics and their entire feeds with their interviews and such).
And also by using the web player, not only Mosaic. So maybe just two sets of links like the radio feeds right now?
That would be awesome!

If you are still trying to decide whether to join the millions who watch live Major League Baseball games on their computers, don’t sweat it.
MLB.com and Right Guard have you covered.
Due to overwhelming demand by baseball fans in just about every corner of the world, MLB.com is extending its offer through the end of April for Right Guard’s presentation of a five-day, risk-free trial of MLB.TV and MLB.TV Premium.
Just think about all those people who did this on Opening Day. Every out-of-market game was streamed live, and in those first five days they could have seen three quick homers by Grady Sizemore, a dazzling MLB debut by Daisuke Matsuzaka, Jose Reyes constantly heading for third, the Pirates’ stunning start at Houston, a winter wonderland in Cleveland and every season debut by your favorite team’s starting rotation.
Not surprisingly, many of those people are now season or monthly subscribers. After five days, you probably will understand why and are likely to follow the rest of the season this way.
MLB.TV is the best friend a baseball fan ever had if you are a business traveler away from your favorite team; living in an area far from your team’s local cable reach (and that’s a bunch of you); away at college; wanting to track your fantasy roster in the most technologically perfect way possible; just following a favorite player; researching for your upcoming All-Star vote; wanting to see your friend who has choice seats in camera view; a mother of a big-leaguer wondering if her boy is eating right out there on the road; looking for on-demand archived broadcasts; wanting to be part of the in-crowd; hoping for a no-hitter; like most everyone else around here.
Here are the basics on MLB.TV and MLB.TV Premium services if you want to try them out, and remember, you can try them all out for free.
MLB.TV Premium
This is a new feature for 2007, and it is available now at $119.95 for the year or $19.95 a month. MLB.TV Premium includes everything in the basic MLB.TV package, but it also includes MLB.TV Mosaic. This revolutionary tool was introduced at the end of last season in beta, allowing you to see any six live games simultaneously on one computer screen. After listening to your feedback, there are powerful new Mosaic capabilities that people are currently mesmerized to behold around the clock. Drag-and-drop a game’s thumbnail from all those choices so it puts the currently playing game you want most right in the sweet spot. Take complete control. Track up to 20 players simultaneously with Mosaic — another breakthrough for fantasy owners. If you do not wish to download Mosaic, then you still can watch single games at high-speed (up to 700 kbps) with MLB.TV Premium. MLB.com Gameday Audio is included.
MLB.TV
Major League Baseball became the first and only sports league in 2003 to begin streaming its live games over the Internet, and this modern staple of fandom is back at $89.95 for the year or $14.95 a month. Watch 99 percent of all regular-season games live (blackouts apply). Get immediate access to games already played this season, so you can go watch every one of the four long balls Alex Rodriguez already has knocked out. Get Condensed Games that include only plays resulting in a hit or out; Extended Highlights for each game; Searchable Video and Clickable Linescores, which let you simply click any half-inning and watch only that action. MLB.com Gameday Audio is included as a new feature for this season.
Not much else needs to be said. MLB.TV does all the talking for itself. Just try it out for five days, risk-free, and see for yourself what most baseball fans are talking about in 2007. Even if you wait until the very last day of the month to make your move, you’ll still get the five days. It’s inspirational, it’s sensational, it’s even anti-perspirational.
“The technological advances made these days are pretty amazing,” Rangers shortstop Michael Young said a while back after playing in front of an insane number of MLB.TV viewers who were watching live in countries all over. “Technology never stops. Twenty-five years from now we’re going to look back and say that the Internet was like a VHS tape or an 8-track.”

Hey *******,
“NO REFUNDS AFTER 5DAYS”
Where are you getting this from? The terms of service clearly state
“In order to provide the highest customer satisfaction possible, MLBAM will refund the paid purchase price of (a) a yearly subscription to MLB.TV Premium, MLB.TV or MLB.com Gameday Audio if the refund request is received within ten (10) days of the date of purchase,”
Notice the word 10. NOT 5. but 10. So where the heck are you getting 5 from??
Just another example of pure ignorance.

Jason:
Just checked my 6 screen display this morning, and all is working fine at 10:45 CDT. All games scheduled for today are showing in the display with their scheduled starting time displaying correctly except the Seattle at Boston game scheduled for a 2:05 EDT start time. This game is showing as “Blacked Out” in my 6 screen display. WHY? I am in Arkansas, and noway should this game be blacked out in Arkansas. Explanation please??
@ laman400@yahoo.com
Blackout related issues are not something we on the Mosaic blog can fix. From Justin’s post “For those that are still having trouble getting into games on either the Mosaic or MLB.TV, you’ll need now to call into our customer service department”
Status Update:
At 1:37 EST, just 28 minutes before the scheduled start time of the Seattle-Boston game in Boston, I received a message across the face of my 6 screen Mosaic display stating that All Games were being updated, then a few seconds later, the correct list of blackedout games for my zip code changed at the top of the Mosaic display, and the Seattle-Boston game that was previously being shown as Blackedout on my display became available, along with 2 other games from the East Coast that were previously showing erroneously as being blackedout on my display changed to available. So I guess the thing I learned from this exercise is that the list of available games might be updated at 11am EST on the display, but the actual correct list of blackedout games for your zipcode might not showup on your Mosaic display until just minutes before the start time of the game.
I still don’t receive any video in the 6 or 4 tv sets. Some time last week I rec’d video in both but recently nothing.
I have included my DxDiag. Hopefully we can resolve this problem.

Hi Justin,
Any news on when are we going to be able to watch a better quality video? MLB.TV promised TV Quality, so far this looks like a video posted in yotube

So where’s this “new build” that was supposed to be released this morning?

Same here. Things aren’t working and they have no clue whatsoever. I’ve received e-mails from the support system, but they were totally useless and they have no idea why my system isn’t working. The last “suggestion” I received was to buy new hardware. As if I should buy a new computer or video card just to “try and see” if it works. Sure, what if it doesn’t work next? Are they going to refund my new computer? My hardware is good enough by their own admission, but the mosaic is still not working.
I’m outraged. I paid to have the mosaic and I want it! I’m not going to settle for less, and I definitely want my money back if they’re not going to give me what I bought. For the moment, I’ve just been robbed for nothing. I’m not going to settle down for anything. My money or the service. There is just NO way I’m going to be happy with paying more to get less.
I know it “just” 30 bucks or so, but I don’t care. I’m just not giving an extra cent! I just wonder how many users got cheated anyway. Thirty dollars, say 10 thousand people, you do the math and realize how much money they’re making this way, without even providing the service.
I was disappointed in the beginning. Now I’m angry and getting angrier every day. I’ll keep voicing my displeasure because you can’t treat customers this way. It’s utterly disgusting.

I really want to get this working on the Acer, as it is set up to connect to my TV. Please help. I’ve posted frequently here and gotten no response at all.

@ Justin
Yes I have tried the 700k feeds, they are good on a 3.5 in square, but when you click the full screen option, then the image loses definition; I am a Yankee fan and those games from Yankee Stadium are the worse to watch on MLB.TV; so my question stands, are you guys going to address the video quality sometime soon?

What I don’t understand is: are we going to get our money back? And if so, when? Because I signed up for it, no free trial, and I’m paying for something I am not getting and I am starting to think that if MLB.com doesn’t want to listen to me, then I have to get my voice heard somehow in a way they’ll finally listen. Either way, I want what I paid for, or my money back. So far, I’ve just been robbed of money I won’t be seeing again for a service I’m yet to see!
And please note: I totally understand the work you developers are putting into this. But there must be somebody in the business departments who has to start making business decisions. Software engineers are working hard, sure, but the point is that the product isn’t ready and isn’t working. Well, then let’s NOT make people pay for it until it’s ready, how about that?

Everything is working great on my system! Best $120 I have spent in awhile. I am glad left America and moved to Europe though… no blackouts!
@mlb
i called the 800# to get clarification on why the rangers are blacked out in my area. i was on hold from 3:47pm – 4:47pm CST today (tuesday).
that’s ONE HOUR. i have to go now so i couldn’t wait any longer. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. not to mention i’m still waiting to get an email response from them from over a week ago.
the executives have to see the call hold times and call drop rates.
i really hope upper level management isn’t taking its fans for granted knowing MLB is a monopoly.

I hear you! I just wish there was something I could do about it. Seriously, I know it is something Justin is aware of and working on. I can only help with MLB Mosaic related issues.
@ cwgraffix@hotmail.com
Glad to hear your enjoying the Mosaic!
Interesting blackout situation for me. My billing information, and my home address is in zip code 55123. However I attend college just south in zip code 56001. Neither of these zip codes are on the Brewers’ blackout list, but when I’m at home I can watch the Brewers. While at college, they’re blacked out. Any reason for this?
@michael081@sympatico.ca
Sounds like a connection issue if you can not get video, since your video card has newer drivers. Have you taken your PC and plugged it directly into the cable modem? If that still produces no video, then there may be an application preventing the mosaic from connecting to the internet. One customer just told me that “if you want to tell people on the blog. It was my Spyware Doctor “On Guard” blocker–I had to create exclusions to it. Now the program loads and works”
A lot of the problems we are seeing are due to settings/applications installed on the customer’s computer.

You can select option 1 on the phone, and that should get you more quickly to a representative that will be able to assist you in verifying your account.
@mosaic,
i did choose option 1 and waited an hour before hanging up.
@mosaic,
and i understand this is out of your control, however, this is my only place to vent where people w/in the company seem to listen.
@mosaic,
one more thing. other than MLB customer support mosaic is working like a charm. hopefully all the bugs will get worked out in the next couple of weeks and we will start seeing feature enhancements.
On high stream level in 6or4 game modes it buffers to 11% then starts playing for 10-20 seconds then once again it buffers till 11% and the cycle goes on and on any ideas??
@ro290190
Sending you an e-mail to get more info on your system specs.
I watched the midday games today with no problem. After going out for the afternoon though, I get home and start up mosaic, it updates, and now I can’t get medium or high quality to work on 6 or 4 game view. It starts buffering but takes FOREVER! Once it eventually does start showing video, it buffers again FOREVER after about 15 seconds. Any idea why this might be? I’m guessing it has something to do with the latest update since I was fine before it.
I can watch any games without any trouble on the MLB one game at a time but can’t watch any from the Mosaic…I can hear commentators, can see the stats and scores change, but no image…
I purchased the MLB.TV Premium package yesterday. I’ve discovered I’m being incorrectly blacked out – I’m originally from southern California (my card was registered there), but I live in Seattle now. So now I can’t watch any Angels games, which was the point of getting MLB.TV in the first place. “No problem,” I think. “Should be able to clear this up with customer service.” Right? Wrong.
I spent a total of two hours today on hold. First, for a half hour, and then for another hour and a half. Yes, I pushed one. And then waited. And waited. And listened to the patronizing, LYING messages that help was just a “moment away.” I’m usually a very calm guy, but I’ve never been more frustrated with poor customer treatment.
I love baseball. I can’t get enough of it. I’m usually a cheap guy, and don’t spend much, but I was more than willing to spend the $120 for MLB.TV premium. I’m now trying to cancel my account through the trial cancellation email address. I hope it goes through, because I do not want to sit on hold again to try to cancel.
Your product is wonderful when it works, and I’d gladly pay for it. But there is no way I can give MLB my money when they treat their customers in this way. I could not put up a season’s worth of frustration like that, and I don’t think anyone should.
Ok I have no problems with the mosaic, I don’t even use it I’m not a premium subscriber. But since there is no MLB.TV blog I’ll post that here.
Am I the only one who misses seeing commercials during breaks ? Seriously, last year’s hearing Tom Petty every inning was already too much for my nerves. Then this year with have “baseball pong” and this night pacman ??????? I am watching a baseball game, I’m not playing on my gameboy! Put the ads back, or at least find something that won’t make me want to sleep.
Oh and I’m probably dreaming, but is it too much to ask not to have the stream cut a half second after the last out of the inning is recorded ? I feel like you guys will be hung up if we see 1 second of commercials or postgame show, which I feel should be included in a baseball package.
That was my rant, I can’t help but say thanks anyway, without mlb.tv I wouldn’t be able to watch baseball here in France…
@daryanjr
I will send you an e-mail to get your system specs and see if there’s anything in there that might be causing your recent issues. I don’t believe we made any changes in the latest update that would cause your problem.
@lavoie
I will also send you an e-mail for the same information. Usually the issue that you are having is due to a video card or firewall issues. We’ll try to clear that up for you.
Are local blackouts determined by where you’re currently located or where your account was purchased? Also, does it seem like they suddenly decided to just now instute them?
Well I live 300 miles north of Toronto and was never blacked out last year.
I bought the deluxe Mosaic package this year and I am blocked of all Toronto games.
I might be too late to cancel this year but they can shove it up their *** the following years.
Oh, and I spent 1 1/2 hours trying to get through on the phone with them and was still on hold.
I have never seen such poor customer support like this in my life.
mlb.com YOU ****!
I wanted to watch the Cards-Cubs game on Saturday (a FOX broadcast), but I live in Dallas so we got the Yankees-Red Sox. Why does MLB.TV still black it out even though it’s not a national game here? I couldn’t find it at any local sports bar either (the one’s the pay $$$ a month for sports games). What’s the deal?
I still don’t understand why I’m being blackout in every single game, specially when i don’t even live in the United States. Take care of these problems because your product is really starting to **** to many of your customers.
I would never suggest MLB tv to anyone. I have been blacked out of way too many games. It is not worth the money. I just wanted to watch some baseball today, any baseball, and I’m black out of every game although only one is playing in my area. I am extremely disapointed.
